Hello, again! I'm sorry I haven't been updating my blog for a while, but I've been in England and Ireland for the past 10 days running around and absorbing as much culture as physically possible! The posts that will follow this one in the next few days will be all about my trip (and I'll be sharing lots of pictures as well), but first I need to catch up on what I did BEFORE I left on my 10-day break. That means - the Aquarium! (Also known as the Haus des Meeres.) This particular aquarium used to be an anti-aircraft tower, and was then converted into what it is now - a madhouse of reptiles, amphibians, mammals, and fish. It's 7 stories tall, and there was a new surprise on every floor. I decided to take this organized IES outing to take lots of pictures, so I hope you enjoy them! (Though, I obviously didn't take the first one. That's me!)
In the entrance on the 1st floor they have a sort of "petting tank" where you can - if you wash your hands before (and after) - actually "pet" the carp swimming in the tank! (Fly fishing prepared me well for this activity, as most of my friends tended to scream every time a fish swam anywhere near them. A very funny spectacle.)
This is a fish - I don't know what kind of fish. I've forgotten. But I liked it.
On the 4th (or maybe the 5th) floor, this clear plastic tube served as a handrail. Unfortunately, it was full of enormous red ants, and every time I looked down I jumped a little. Ants are icky...
On the 5th floor there were free-flying bats everywhere. I don't know how they managed to keep the guano in check, but it didn't smell TOO bad... I thought they were pretty cute!
Also, there were free range monkeys that were so tiny they could sit in the palm of your hand. Some of them tried to get into my bag, and you had to be careful they didn't try to jump on you. They aren't supposed to be fed or held, but they had obviously acclimated to both forbidden activities.
Another large fish...
A lounging iguana!
This is one of my favorite pictures that I've taken with my new camera. This sea turtle was one of the coolest animals they had at the aquarium, and was also very active while we were there - munching on some lettuce :)
Another colorful fish that I can't remember the name of...
And another. But I like the face on this one - it reminds me a bit of brain coral.
The octopus was another animal that was fun to watch. It had all sorts of plastic blocks and "puzzles" in its tank and was moving around quite a bit!
And now that it's very late, I need to get to bed so I can go to class at 9 tomorrow morning. I promise that in the next few days I'll do my best between classes to post all my pictures and experiences from vacation, but right now I need some sleep.
